PA Convention Center ExpansionThe Pennsylvania Convention Center is expanding, and it is all from slot machine revenue. The state’s slot machine revenue has made it possible for the convention center to have a $700 million expansion – as many people say that out of all of the problems with the center, which opened in 1994, the fact that it is not big enough is the biggest problem. The new center is supposed to be completed by 2010, and they have already begun ripping it apart. Initially, many did not like the idea of taking slot machine revenue to improve the structure; they said that this was a Philadelphia project, not a state project. They wanted the slot machine revenue used for something else, and wanted Philly to pay for their own upgrades. However, the slot machines being legalized, and the slots revenue being so high, there was no question of it bringing in $880 million for the expansion and $225 million for a hockey arena in Pittsburgh. The center was able to prove that they were losing business due to current conditions, and thus had to renovate or they might as well close down. They are hoping that by using the slot machine revenue to change the way it looks, that they will be able to change the way people view it all together. They hope to lure in groups that have already written them off, due to the problems with the old structure and the politics that went on with it.
