Second Life is Just Like the First OneSecond Life is a virtual world where people can interact with each other over the internet. However, it seems that Second Life is becoming a whole lot like this life with the police and the government sticking their head into all of it, and the freaks finding their place there as well. Between the child pornography, illegal gambling, etc., Second Life is starting to look very familiar. Second Life has allowed gambling to go on in this virtual world, and now the government is saying that virtual gambling is just the same as real gambling and that it is illegal. Because of the FBI investigation into the world, all gambling has been banned. Linden Labs, the company that owns and runs Second Life, has released a statement saying that no more money wagering in the virtual world would be allowed – and that slot machines, poker, roulette, etc. would be banned. The company had allowed the FBI into their world to show them that they were complying with US law, and it seems that they weren’t. Because they use virtual money, and they can use these virtual winning to buy virtual goods within the site, it is considered illegal. It seems to me that unless I can take my virtual money to the real life grocery store and buy real life food with it, the whole idea of the government stepping in here is ludicrous. So now that you can’t even have fun in imaginary worlds online, what’s next – imagination patrol?
