Gambling Addiction Calls IncreaseAccording to the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling, the number of calls to their hotline has increased, as have the number of people who admit they have committed some sort of crime to fund their gambling addiction. One in four callers that are willing to talk about their problem admit that they have committed a crime due to their gambling addiction. The FCCG says that they had more than 3,700 calls out of the 14,000 that they received come at a time when the caller was in great distress over their gambling habit. They have seen a more than 25% increase in their calls over the past years, and have never seen a jump this large before. They say that of those that called, 24% had committed an illegal act to fund their gambling, and 17% said that they had to file bankruptcy as a direct result. They hasten to add that these are only the numbers for those people who had agreed to talk about it, many more won’t. It seems that the new slot machine venues that have been created, as well as poker rooms on gambling cruises have had a large impact on the number of gambling addicts that the state of Florida currently plays host to. They expect the number of calls to increase substantially over the next 12 to 18 months as there will be a delayed reaction to the addition of the slots.
