Slot Machines Now IllegalIn what came as a huge surprise to many within the country, President George Maxwell Richards has made slot machine gambling illegal in Trinidad and Tobago. Many suspected that he might go through with his plan to make them illegal, but many others truly thought that he would not go through with it. The new law, the Gambling and Betting Act, bans all slot machines in common gaming houses and private members’ clubs. If a private member’s club participates in slot machine gambling, it will be considered a “gaming house” under the rules of the new act, and thus illegal. Not only is it illegal to participate in the slot machine gambling, but you will be considered guilty and liable of a fine of $1,500 or twelve months in jail. You can no longer own, occupy, announce or establish any sort of residence or business as a gambling house, and the possession of slot machines will make it one. Initially, private members’ clubs were allowed to have slot machines as they were exempt under Section 10 of the act. However, an amendment has been made to the act that cancels this provision and makes slot machines illegal there also. Therefore, you can gamble in the private club as long as you don’t have slot machines. Once you operate a slot machine on the premises, you are now no longer exempt from the gambling ban.
