Voters Vote Against Slot Machines

Voters have decided that slot machines are not to be in Sedgwick County. The voters decided that having a casino in their county was not what they wanted, and overwhelmingly voted against it. More than 100,000 residents turned out to vote, and more than half voted against the casino – 56 to 43%.

With both sides campaigning hard for and against the slots casino, it was a toss up as far as most people were concerned as to whether or not it would pass- even though early polling showed more for than against. However, almost half of the population of the county turned out to vote on the special election that would decide on the casino. To put it in perspective, only 38% showed up for a same sex marriage ban amendment.

Six counties had held the special election for a casino and slot machines and out of the six only Sedgwick voted against the slot machines. Sumner County could not be happier with their refusal of the slot machines, as they voted in a casino in 2005 and can now run it without fear of competition from the county.

The groups that rallied against the slot machines said that they were pleased with the results of the vote, they did not want the slots coming in – and had worked very hard at getting their message out about the dangers that come with slot machines.

Those for the slot machines were disappointed in the outcome of the vote, especially since they also rejected them at the Wichita Racetrack. This means that without the slot machines the track will have to close and 250 people will be out of work.
