Track Fans May Have to Go Elsewhere

One more tragedy to report in the wake of slot machines – a long standing tradition of cross country in the state may have to end. Scioto Downs is one of the seven horse tracks across the state that is soon going to be getting slot machines. The state says that this is good for business and for their bottom line because they don’t have the money to continue on as they have been without more money coming into state coffers. They say that they are going to have to close a lot of great programs that the state offers without the slot machines.

However, the Ohio High School Athletic Association is upset because they usually hold their track meet at the racetrack – and have done so since 1985. High school cross country fans understand that if they want to watch the meet they will show up at the track to do it – and they do – in droves. More than ten thousand fans show up every year to watch the match, and next year they may have to find somewhere else to do it.

This is no small meet – there are 96 teams and more than 950 boy and girl champions showing up to compete. In fact, depending on when slot machines arrive at the track they may be out of luck for this year as well. They said that they are not changing the meet yet because it would be “premature” but they are looking for a way of fixing this mess for next year.

The state says that the slot machines are a necessity, and the school agrees that additional money is needed, but they say that it comes at the price of a rich tradition that will end up eliminated. They say that at this point they are simply waiting to see what will become of them.
