Underage Gambling Not Allowed

There is concern among families over a new slot machine arcade that has come to Leigh. Local families say that they don’t want the slot machines in their town as they are afraid that their children and their teenagers will be able to go there and play, not realizing the stakes in the game. They say that the slot machines are going to make their children into addicts and want it gone. They had fought to keep it out earlier this year, but according to them they lost to the greed of the state.

Both Southend Council and Leigh Town Council had rejected the slot machine arcade from coming in. Southend said that they could not use the former newsagent’s as an arcade and Leigh said that it would promote anti-social behavior. But the planning inspector allowed them to come in. They offer slot machines, sports betting and fixed odd betting to those that wish to partake. They also have a sandwich bar and offer coffee to their players.

The slot machine arcade says that the parents have nothing to fear. John Felton, their area manager, said that they have a strict policy against allowing those under the age of 18 to come onto the premises. They say that they understand why residents would be concerned about their children getting involved in the slot machine gambling, but they want to assure them that they are an adults only place for gambling.

Felton says that this is a new concept and they think that once residents come in and play the slot machines and see what it is all about that they will enjoy it and come back for more. He also thinks that over time they will see that they had nothing to fear.
