No More Cruising for this Boat

The Aurora boat has a long history of offering slot machine gambling to their clients – and it has been around for a long time. This gambling boat was built when Illinois first made slot machine gambling illegal except for on the water. But now the slot machines don’t run on this boat anymore and it is ready to be demolished. They didn’t even take the keys out of the ignition as no one wants it anymore.

This particular boat served as one of two slot machine boats for the Hollywood Casino from 1993 to 2002. They made up to 18 trips a day for those slot machine players, and they had a good time of it – until the Illinois legislature removed the restriction that the slot machines had to be on the water. Instead, the Hollywood Casino could now be on land, and so they made the move along with the other casinos that had been drifting up and down the river. This boat has been docked and was waiting for a new owner – but none came.

There was talk of a floating restaurant, etc. but nothing ever come out of these talks and so it has been sitting there. Now the slot machine boat is going to be dismantled instead, by a Batavia based demolition company. They say that they just don’t make boats like this anymore and they are going to use parts of it in other places. They are going to “clean out all of the debris and dismantle it just like [they] would a water tower or a bridge.” So there are parts and pieces of the slot machine boat that could live again.
