Bettman Betting on Slot MachinesNHL Commissioner Gary Bettman believes that the best plan to keep the Pittsburgh Penguins in Pittsburgh would be to give the Isle of Capri a slot machine license. He says that since the Isle has agreed to pay for the entire new arena that the Penguins are saying will keep them here - then give them their slot machine license so that they do it. The other contenders have said they will give money toward the team if they are given the slot machine license, but Bettman says that just isn’t enough. He thinks that if the Isle of Capri does not get the slot machine license, that the Penguins will most likely leave Pittsburgh. The Penguins have been playing in the Mellon Arena, which is 45 years old and one of the smallest in the league. With Isle getting their slot machine license, they would build a brand new arena for the Penguins and thus ensuring they stay in town. Bettman
is not alone in his thinking for at the Pennsylvania Gaming
Control Board meeting last week, Jim Balsillie – soon to be the
Penguins new owner – said pretty much the same thing. The
popular thinking is that Isle is willing to pay for an entirely
new arena if they get the slot machines, so why not just give
them the license?
