Crossroads' Slot Machines Meeting Resistance

The Crossroads Gaming Resort and Spa, a $300 million proposal to bring a slot machine casino to Gettysburg, has not been met with much support. Residents think it defiles the memory of those who died there, not to mention the fact that bringing in slot machines would harm the historical tourism industry. The group says they disagree with that analysis, and that the slot machines would bring in jobs as well as tax revenue.

Susan Star Paddock, Chairwoman for No Casino Gettysburg – an anti-slot machine casino group – thinks that when they go before the Gaming Control Board they will be forced to answer questions about their finances. The slot machine group enlisted the help of Silver Point Capital LP last week as top investor. "I expect there will be considerable questions about their finances," said Star Paddock, who regularly attends board meetings. She also thinks that they will be asking about the impact on traffic and businesses in the area.

David La Torre, the slot machine casino spokesman said that Silver Point is bound to draw some questions, but nothing out of the ordinary. "I think every applicant has faced questions about ownership (at their hearing)," La Torre said. He went on to say that as far as the impact slot machines will have on traffic and businesses, "Let's be clear: Every [slot machine license] applicant should expect tough questions. The Gaming Control Board has a very tough job to do [in determining the slot machine license], and they would be remiss if they didn't ask tough questions. We will certainly put our best foot forward in both areas."
