Slot Machines are Not the End of It

With all of the competition for slot machine revenue in the east part of the country, many in Delaware are trying to figure out where to go next. With PA legalizing slot machines, they are going to see a loss of over $30 million in just one area. If Maryland decides to legalize slot machines as well then they will lose roughly half of their revenue from the southern part of the state.

Because of these figures, Delaware is thinking slot machines may not be enough for them. Under a federal mandate, Delaware is the only state east of Mississippi that has the right to offer sports betting in addition to their slot machines. Officials think this might be a good way to combat the lost revenue, and try to slow down the impending budget fights.

They are aware that Governor Ruth Ann Minner is opposed to allowing table games or any additional slot machine parlors anywhere so they are unable to expand gambling by using that route. However, they think that by looking into sports gambling they may be on to something. "It's something that Pennsylvania and West Virginia and, eventually, Maryland would all want, but they simply can't have it," said Ed Sutor, chief operating officer at Dover Downs. "We think it would be a tremendous boost to Delaware."

Facing a loss of somewhere around $130 million from slot machine revenue going to PA or Maryland, sports betting starts to sound very promising. There are those that think even if Minner won’t allow any more slot machines she will at least take into consideration the fact that sports betting may add in additional revenue to combat that which will be lost.
