Tribes Expand Slot MachinesThe Salish and Kootenai tribes have roughly 200 Class II slot machines that remain in their possession after slot machine compact negotiations failed with Montana. But that is not stopping them from expanding their slot machines to other locations. They just announced in October that they will be bringing in a new slot machine and gambling business off U.S. Highway 93 near Missoula. Class II slot machines and gambling in Indian Country brings in roughly $3.4 billion a year, while Class III gambling brings in $19.2 billion. The Seminoles’ Class II bingo slot machines bring in roughly 1/3rd of all revenue in Indian Country, with nearly $1 billion in annual revenue. On Thursday they announced that they will be purchasing the Hard Rock entertainment conglomerate for $965 million. "This is a proud moment for the Seminole Tribe of Florida and for all Indian tribes," said Mitchell Cypress, chairman of the elected Tribal Council. "It is also an opportunity for the Seminole Tribe to diversify its business operations and help a very successful company to achieve even greater growth."
