Iowa Missing Slot Machines Iowa Lottery sales have dropped ever since the slot machines were banned in the state. The state decided that the TouchPlay lottery slot machines needed to be illegal, and ordered them pulled out of every retail outlet across Iowa. The state said that they were too much like slot machines and thus had to be removed, as state law says that slot machines can only be played in casinos. However, without the slot machines, the state of Iowa has seen their lottery drop $20 million from where it was same time last year. They say that they will have a great year this year, their revenue will be the highest it has ever been without slot machines in the state, but it will still be lower than last year. With the slot machines, last year the lottery brought in $341.8 million. Without the slot machines, they are expected to hit around $212.5 million. It seems that the absence of slot machines is going to end up costing them roughly $129.3 million this year. The state says that although they are not offering the slot machines this year, scratch offs have been doing very well. They find that if a $2 ticket pays fairly well people are more willing to spend that instead of paying $1 for a ticket that doesn’t pay as well. They do admit however, that they have not yet found anything that pays nearly as well as the slot machines did.
