La Costa Slot Machine Conference

Labor groups and the horseracing industry are taking California’s newest legislators to La Costa for a conference on Indian slot machine and casino gaming. They are hosting a joint conference to talk about the slot machine compacts that have been signed by the Governor and the tribes. Both groups are fundamentally opposed to the slot machine compact signed as both will be impacted greatly.

The compact will allow Agua Caliente to bring in 3,000 more slot machines, to bring them to a total of 5,000. Other tribes will be allowed to bring in up to 7,500 slot machines. The unions and the racetracks kept those slot machine compacts from being approved at the end of the last session, but they are gearing up to start the process again. Jack Gribbon, political director for California’s UNITE HERE said that by having this conference to discuss the slot machine compacts, union and track officials will have a chance to discuss their side of the deals.

He says that by meeting with the new legislators they will get a chance to talk about the slot machine compacts and how detrimental it will be to both the racing industries and the unions. The compact would allow the tribes to have slot machines but not the racetracks, and racetracks feel this gives them an unfair advantage. The unions want to be able to get others to sign up for the union if they want, but they say the slot machine compact makes that impossible.
