Majestic Star Wins Slot Machine LicenseWith Majestic Star winning the slot machine license, Pittsburgh has a lot to look forward to. Don Barden has agreed to a lot to get the slot machine license, so Pittsburgh is looking forward to him making good on those promises. Barden is planning on opening his Majestic Star slot machine casino west of the Carnegie Science Center in March 2008. He is working with the city to try and work out an arrangement to keep the Pittsburgh Penguins and give them a new arena now that he has won the slot machine license. Part of the agreement for him getting the slot machine license was that his casino would pay $7.5 million a year for 30 years towards the arena, but the Penguins will have to chip in as well. "Everyone will get the best of all worlds," Barden said after state gambling regulators unanimously approved his slot machine proposal. "There will be an arena, which we will assist in funding -- which is fair for everyone. No one should have to pay for an arena in its entirety." The Gaming
Control Board’s decision to award the slot machine license to
Majestic surprised many, who thought that the fact that one of
their competitors – Isle of Capri – had offered to pay for the
entire arena themselves, was more than enough to give them the
slot machine license. However, the Majestic Star will give the
state more money in the long run, estimating $484 million a year
in slot machine revenue.
