Slot Machines Take Over PhiladelphiaWith two slot machine casinos and slot machines allowed at the tracks, Philadelphia is about to become the largest city in the nation to allow casinos. However, it comes at a high price. The state has a 54% tax on slot machine revenue, which is the highest tax of any of the 36 states that allow gambling. The slot machine revenue is earmarked for property tax relief. In Philadelphia, it would also allow a cut in the city’s wage tax which is paid by those who work in the city no matter where they live. If the slot machines bring in the $2 billion annually that they are supposed to, the city thinks it will be able to cut the wage tax 13%. The city will also receive a $25 million host fee that will be paid to them by the slot machine casinos, and they will get roughly 10,000 permanent jobs – not to mention all the jobs for construction. Casino Free Philadelphia is still trying to get the slot machine law overturned, as they think the public has not been slowed to see the casinos’ final proposals. He says that the slot machine proposals were modified after the period for public comments was over. Plus, the state has not established standards for the impact that slot machines would have on the neighborhoods in and around the casinos. "Do we even want Philadelphia to be the next Atlantic City?" he says. "We already have a lot of good things happening in the city. We're not desperate."
