Putin Wants Slot Machines Gone By July

A new bill proposed by President Vladimir Putin would make slot machines all but illegal in Russia. He is moving the larger casinos and their slot machines to four remote locations in the country, hence pretty much cutting off their gambling supply from the majority of the country. If you are a smaller casino you must shut down your slot machines and close your doors by July. If you are a larger casino, you have until 2009 to move your tables and slot machines to one of the four approved locations.

Samoil Binder of the Russian Association for Gaming Business Development says the bill is just too “revolutionary” for their country. He says that the tightening of slot machine and gambling regulations is a good idea, but that the way they are going about it is wrong. He believes that the “whole gambling industry is going to collapse,” and that the bill is “overly ambitious” in its timetable for getting all of the slot machines and casinos to the four locations. He says there will be a loss of slot machine and gambling jobs and their country cannot afford that kind of destruction.

The bill comes about as in recent years gambling has all but taken over Russia – especially in Moscow. There are slot machines everywhere, and people are losing money hand over fist. You can play a slot machine pretty much wherever you go, and the amount of people per machine is staggering. You could get a slot machine license for very little money, so that didn’t help to squash it, nor did changing the regulations.

Moscow has seen the worst of it, with the majority of the country’s wealth in one location; it is no wonder that slot machines would expand the way they have. People keep spending and losing money at the slot machines, so more and more slot parlors keep opening. It is a vicious cycle.
