Are Slot Machines the Only Way to Finance Education?

With slot machines already popping up in Philadelphia and Wilkes-Barre, and many, many more slot machines to come, some are wondering if Pennsylvania is taking the best route when it comes to figuring out their economic problems. They think that funding education may not be best served by bringing in slot machines and all of the problems that come with them. The latest, 2,200 new slot machines at Philadelphia Park, seem to come at a time of year when we should be considering something other than playing the slots at your local casino.

The fact that the board even considered bringing in slot machines at Gettysburg, a place where young men died fighting for their country, is all too telling of where the state of PA is headed. A massive expansion indeed, slot machines are all but taking over the entire state. With eleven different locations to play the slot machines, you would be hard pressed to not find one near you. But the problem isn’t just the slot machines; it is our reliance on them to fix a problem that has been plaguing the state for years, and years. It is the fact that our public education system is not getting enough money – and has been taxing the properties of citizens to pay for it.

The state needed revenue, and Governor Ed Rendell said let’s bring in slot machines and use the revenue to fix the problem. The slot machines would pay for education and drop the property tax so that people would be more able to afford their homes. It seems so innocent, bring in slot machines and solve everyone’s problems – however, what about the problems that are created by the slot machines coming in?

Ultimately you will end up with those who play the slot machines who cannot really afford to, and they will lose their homes, families, etc. Bankruptcy and suicide inevitably follow the slot machines. So although there has been much talk and planning when bringing in the slot machines, they have done nothing to prepare for the slot machine addicts. Perhaps a little more of the time spent trying to figure out how to bring slot machines in should have been spent trying to figure out what to do once they are actually here.
