Sports Teams Unhappy with Slot Machine Decision

The Pittsburgh Steelers are not taking the news of the new slot machine casino very well. The Pirates are not happy with the slot machine news either, but at least they seem to be taking it in stride. The Steelers are angry at the choice to allow Don Barden to build a slot machine casino only a block away from Heinz Field, and have been very vocal in their opinion of it.

"We are extremely disappointed in the decision of the Gaming Commission to award the [slot machine] casino license on the North Shore," Steelers president Art Rooney II said. "It seemed it was a process that was designed to give little weight to local interests and the result is indicative of that. We will have to consider all of our options in determining how to respond to this decision [to build the slot machine casino so close]."

The Pirates were a little nicer about it, but they can also afford to be as the slot machine casino will not be in their immediate backyard. However, they are still concerned with the parking situation, and with slot machine players wanting the same spots as baseball fans, things could start to get a little hairy.

"What I worry about is if it will cause congestion," McClatchy said. "We do well on weekends, with 30,000 fans over here, and if you add 4,000 [slot machine players’] cars to the mix, it's a challenge. Will our fans have the ability to get to the ballpark quickly, or will it create congestion that hurts everybody?"

Plus there is the issue that if Isle of Capri had won the slot machine license, they would have built a new stadium for the Pittsburgh Penguins – out of their own money. They will not be asking the taxpayers to foot the bill as will happen with the other groups who were seeking the slot machine license. Their lease is about to run out on the Mellon Arena, and they will now be able to go anywhere they want. The new stadium would have kept them in Pittsburgh, but no one knows what will happen now.
