Slot Machines Could Assist State

Texas has two major problems – health care and tuition – and one solution – slot machines. One in four Texans does not have health care, and more and more students cannot afford to go to college because of pricing – slot machines could change that for the state. With the legalization of slot machines, much needed revenue could offset debt for the state to the tune of more than $3 billion in slot revenue a year.

Slot machine advocates have been trying to work out the details over gambling profits, while still trying to lure in lawmakers and have them approve the deal. If slot machines are legalized, it would mean the largest increase in gambling in Texas history since the lottery was allowed in 1992. Slot machine legalization would mean a great deal to the state.

However, not everyone wants to see slot machines legalized. The Christian Life Commission is one of those groups. Suzii Paynter, with the group, said that gambling proponents do not keep their word. She says that when the lottery and pari-mutuel gambling were legalized, promises were made and not kept – why would slot machines be any different. "The lottery was supposed to fix education," she said. "And the horse owners promised $200 million a year" to the state.

She said that the tracks are only giving about $4 million a year to the state, so the fact that slot machine advocates are saying that more than $3 billion would come to the state from slot machine revenue doesn’t mean much. She doesn’t trust them to keep up their end of the bargain once the slot machines are approved.
