Video Sweeps Slot MachinesNo matter what you call them, they are still slot machines. At least that is what the Alabama Supreme Court ruled Friday in reference to some video sweepstakes games at a greyhound dog track in Birmingham. The Birmingham Race Course was trying to pass off slot machines as sweeps games and the court caught them red-handed. The track has been operating slot machines known as “MegaSweeps” and was saying that they were legal games. They took their case to the Jefferson Country Circuit Court where Judge Scott Vowell said that they were “not a lottery and did not involve the use of slot machines or gambling devices.” The Supreme Court decision overturns Vowell’s ruling, and will impact two other cases that are currently sitting in Cullman County Circuit Court. The District Attorney has been saying that the machines are indeed illegal slot machines, no matter how you might dress them up. They say that if there is no skill involved, then they are slot machines. The track says that they are not slot machines, and that they took steps to ensure that the machines would be considered legal before owning and operating them. They are asking for the court to reconsider their ruling, as by making the slot machines illegal they will have to remove them from the track – this will of course mean the loss of hundreds of jobs.
