Texas Looking to Expand Slot Machines In a move worthy of Ohio’s Learn and Earn campaign, a group of Texans are looking to use slot machine revenue to create opportunities for college students. They say that with the high cost of education in the state being what it is, they need something to offset it, and slot machine revenue is the perfect foil. They use the slot machine revenue for something good – and they have a plan on how it will work. The advocates think that a proposal for slot machine casinos and putting video slot machines at racetracks and reservations would raise the money needed to help students attend college. There are many that think the slot machines are the perfect way to help their students out of a crisis, while giving Texans what they want – slot machine gambling. "We're creating the largest economic development bill ever to come before the Texas Legislature," said Jack Pratt, a hotel and casino mogul leading the charge. "There's a pie here that's large enough that everybody can share it." The opposition thinks that no matter how bad the problem of education might be in the state of Texas, slot machines are not the solution. They say that the state already has a huge budget surplus, so why is the slot machine revenue necessary at all. They want to know why the budget surplus can’t be used instead of slot machines to help their students attend college.
