Slot Machines Have Uphill Battle

Governor Elect Deval Patrick has already let it be known that he is not interested in bringing slot machines to the state. However, his latest pick has some people thinking that he is going to try close up the slot machine issue a little faster than originally planned. Patrick chose State Rep. Daniel Bosley to head the state’s economic development efforts – a man who has made it perfectly clear that he opposes slot machine gambling and is considered the movement’s number one obstacle.

Patrick did say that although he is opposed to the slot machines he would stuffy them, seems to be singing a different tune with the appointment of Bosley. Those that are pushing to get the slot machines legalized say that this is actually a good move, as having their “most vocal foe” out of the Legislature could be a good move for them. The state’s racetracks want to bring in thousands of slot machines, and several Native American Tribes as well as Las Vegas casinos, have been chomping at the bit to get slot machines legalized.

Bosley has said that he and Patrick have not yet discussed it, but that he remains opposed to slot machine gambling in Massachusetts. He also said, however, that he doesn’t see it being one of his responsibilities as economic development chief does not usually get involved in the slot machine business. “We came down in the Legislature that it doesn’t make a lot of sense,” Bosley said. “Patrick has got to do the same kind of vetting, and he’s got to make up his own mind.”
