Wheeling Island Expanding and Relocating Slot MachinesWheeling Island Racetrack and Gaming Center is expanding to a larger space with another wing and relocating its slot machines. The new slot machine casino’s wing will be 16,000 square feet, and will cost $8 million. They are breaking ground on the new slot machine casino on Wednesday and expect to be underway in the next two weeks. They are planning on having construction finished and the slot machines moved by May of 2007. The Planning Commission has approved the project, so they are just waiting until after the groundbreaking to get started on the slot machine casino’s expansion. They are currently located in a flood zone, and was last flooded in January 2005 – their architect believes that the new plan for the slot machine casino will reduce the threat of flooding again. They currently have 2,400 slot machines, and are planning on relocating 390 of them. In 2003 the slot machine casino opened a $68 million hotel, a showroom, conference center, a restaurant and a food court. Last year they put another $1 million into the slot machine casino with the addition of seats and a video lottery bar. Wheeling Island executives are hoping that lawmakers will allow table games to be added to the slot machines that they currently have, and believe that 2007 could be the year that happens. Wheeling would like to see lawmakers endorse the bill, and have local voters vote on it.
