Miami Hoping for Slot Machines

Miami-Dade County is giving their voters a second chance to legalize slot machines in their county, now that they have seen what they can do. When first given the chance, at the same time that Broward County was, voters chose not to legalize slot machines in their county. However, Broward did legalize them, which left Miami-Dade County wondering if they had made a mistake.

Not only did they lose out on potential income into the county from the slot machines, but they also watched as residents of their county went over to Broward and played the slot machines over there – giving the other county even more money. They say that they may have acted hastily in ruling out the possibility of the revenue source.

Now, on January 29^th, they will have another chance to decide if they want slot machines or not. Government officials are already planning for a yes vote and are putting steps into play should they get the slot machines legalized. They already have a deal in place that would ensure that the city gets the slot machine revenue due them once the machines go online.

According to a deal that they have made with West Flagler Associates, the owners of the Flagler dog track, they would be getting roughly 1.5% of all slot machine revenues. They anticipate that this number will initially be somewhere around $1 million, and then as it grows so will their cut. Eventually they believe that number will be closer to $3 or $4 million instead. They are planning on adding several other venues to the track to make it a destination instead of just a track, and they believe that this will bring in millions more in revenue.
