Guam Slot Machine Opponents Not Done Yet

According to opponents of the new slot machines in Guam, the amount of time that they have to prevent the machines from coming in is not nearly enough time. They say that Prop A, the proposal to bring slot machines to Guam Greyhound should be taken off of the special ballot for the election to be held on January 5^th.

They have filed a petition with the Guam Supreme Court trying to halt a vote on the “Better Jobs for Guam Act” which they say is simply another attempt by the racetrack to bring in slot machines. They say that the proposal is not about better jobs, it is about slots and gambling devices and it needs to be removed from the ballot.

Opponents say that they don’t have enough time to educate the votes about the risks involved with the promotion, or what the promotion is really about. They say that most people will think that is really is about jobs and not the slot machines that voters have many times before already said they don’t want in their country.

They say that it is already against the law for slot machines to come into their country, and by allowing this bill to come into play they are allowing the track to exempt out of the federal Johnson Act which already makes it illegal to bring slot machines or any other kind of gambling device into their country.

Not only that, but it also allows them to repeal the gross receipts tax and replace it with a 10% slot machine gaming tax. They say that this allows them to get away without paying gross receipts taxes on the slot machines that they would bring in as well as any other revenue that the track makes. They say that the Guam Election Commission failed in ensuring that the ballot measure was “free from defects.”
