Horse Racing Outdated?

With the advent of slot machines and other types of gambling, many horse racing tracks across the United States have seen their profits go down. With other options, people are not flocking to the horse racing tracks like they used to. Instead they are playing slot machines and gambling online, or they are simply going to the casinos.

This led many of them to start to add slot machines and call themselves racinos instead. The influx of slot machines brought in much needed income, and some people who might not otherwise find themselves interested in the tracks. Then as more racetracks brought in slot machines, others had to bring them in as well, for now they were not only competing with the casinos but they are competing with tracks that had the ability to bring in better horses and bigger purses because of their addition of slot machines.

Then you have some states like New Jersey where the tracks and the casinos are constantly fighting over the ability to add slot machines. The casinos say that if they bring in slot machines then they would lose business, and the tracks say that the casinos took their business to start with so they should be able to take some back.

Atlantic City is already feeling the crunch of the surrounding states that have added slot machines as well, and so to go up against the horse racing tracks in their own state in addition to the other casinos would simply take too much income from them. Instead, they pay a subsidy every year to the tracks so that they don’t bring in slot machines. This keeps them happy for now, but every time it is time to renegotiate the funds that the casinos are supposed to be paying, and every time they try to pay less, the tracks remind them that they could be offering slot machines as well.
