May Opening Just Not
Happening
The Ocean Downs slot machine location in
Rickman sent a letter to the Maryland Video Lottery Location
Commission and telling them that aging steel beams, asbestos,
and lead in the paint off the tracks grandstand will keep them
from opening on time as these issues must be resolved before
they can move forward with construction. Their plans to have 800
new slot machines housed in the new grandstand had been put on
indefinite hold.
The building has to be brought up to code before they can even
think about bringing in the slot machines. It must now be
stripped down to roof and beams with the seating removed and
rebuilt, which was originally part of the plan only not to such
an extensive means. The asbestos must be removed, and the lead
paint must be tested to see if the beams can be welded or if
they must be removed and replaced. All of this must be completed
before even the first slot machine can be brought in. Obviously the owner is disappointed as are residents who were hoping to be able to play slot machines by Memorial Day. This also disappoints the state, as this means it will take them longer to get slot machine revenue from the location.
