No Slot Machines for
Airport
The For
starters they said that the airport was not a pari-mutuel
facility, and under state law and county law, that was the only
way to get slot machines. Plus they said that the airport did
not qualify as a person, which also kept them from allowing them
to bring in the slot machines. Finally, they were not going to
be able to have their slot machine operation set up within the
year, which is also a requirement, and therefore could not get
approval. The
airport says that it costs them roughly $600 million a year to
run their airport and with their latest expansion by the end of
2014 they will be looking at $1.1 billion a year. This is an
amount that they say that they cannot afford to pay out without
slot machines to help them offset the costs. The state said that
they did not feel that this warranted slot machines. The airport says that with their “crippling debt” that they needed to get slot machines to stay alive, but opponents say that they should not have gone forward with their expansion considering the revenue problem that they had. Local racinos are thrilled that the slot machines won’t be coming in as they were worried about losing their slot machine revenue to the airport.
