Atlantic City Sees Slot Machine Numbers Drop

With their first round of slot machine revenue numbers down for the first time since 1978 – Atlantic City is right to be concerned. They are now facing stiff competition for their slot machine dollars from surrounding states that have added them as well. With Pennsylvania opening their Philadelphia parlors last month, it just made it worse.

Geographically speaking, it is the slot machines in Philadelphia that are causing them the most problems. Philly is only a little more than an hour from Atlantic City, and with it being that close many of those players that used to come from there to play in AC are now keeping their dollars in the Keystone State instead.

The city also has to worry about those die hard fans that keep bringing in their slot machine dollars to the city that are now going to jump the border and go see what Pennsylvania’s casinos are now like. With the state so dependent on the revenue that comes in from their slot machines, the state may need to start looking at other revenue sources like raising taxes to make their yearly budgets.

Figures for January show that their overall revenue has dropped 2.9% compared to last year, but the drop in slot machine revenue was very scary – having dropped 7.2%. The two casinos in Philadelphia admit that they are targeting those folks who normally go to Atlantic City to play their slot machines, and because of that you see billboards leaving Atlantic City that urge customers to “come play” with them the next time.
