California Casinos Want to Help Slot Machine Gamblers

Many times the casinos say that they are there to make money and that they serve to fulfill a need – bringing slot machines to the masses. The fact that they also bring gambling and slot machine addictions to the masses does not seem to have anything to do with it. However, that is changing.

The California Council on Problem Gambling, located in Anaheim, is trying to change the way slot machine and gambling addictions are viewed, and handled. They are training addiction counselors on how to recognize and treat compulsive gambling. One of the hardest things to realize is that there is no overdosing on gambling – no tests to check to see if they have a problem. They are simply in trouble when the money is gone.

With other addictions, there are more easily seen warning signs – passing out when you have hit your limit, blackouts, failing drug screens – but with slot machines it is more a case of when the kids’ college tuitions are gone you have a problem. Not only are the special interest groups concerned, however, the casinos are realizing that they are as much as part of the problem, and the solution, as others are.

The Viejas Casino provided the room for the training, and they say that they are aware that there is a problem with slot machine and gambling addiction at their casino – and are taking steps to eradicate it. They say that not only are they concerned with the addicted coming to their casino, but also with those within their own tribal community that might be having a problem.
