Charles Town races and Slots is a track that just ten years ago was looking at possible financial ruin and they believed they would have to close their doors. However, once slot machines were legalized at the track, they completely turned it around and now they are doing very well for themselves. With the state considering adding table games to their existing slot machines, the track knows that it will bring in millions in revenue for them and for the state.

The belief is that if table games are legalized that Charles Town will bring in more table game revenue than the other northern tracks combined, and it is assumed that number will be somewhere around $300 million over the next five years. The closest competition to the track is in Maryland, who still has not legalized slot machines. Therefore, the track bringing in table games has just made it look all the more appealing.

Maryland is considering legalizing the slot machines, but everyone knows that even if they were to legalize them at the next election, it still would not affect Charles Town for years - this from a track who could not keep its head above water before they got slot machines. They had cancelled live horse racing back in 1995, laid people off, and put the track up for sale – and then was able to resume racing, but were still facing huge deficits in their revenue.

Penn National Gaming came in back in 1996 and said that they would buy the track for $18 million and put $30 million into it if voters would legalize slot machines at the track. So the voters approved the measure and brought in slot machines, and Penn National turned it all around for the track.
