Group Fails to Eliminate Slot Machines

The group No Slots for ME! has been trying to get a ban on slot machines in the state, but to no avail. The group was trying to get the ban on the ballot this year, but did not get enough signatures on their petition. They needed to have 50,519 signatures by Thursday, but they say that they will not make the deadline. They are now hoping to get it on the November 2008 ballot instead.

The group is trying to stop any further slot machines from coming into the state, as well as outlawing the ones currently in use at Hollywood Slots. Hollywood Slots is the only slot machine facility currently in Maine, and is located in Bangor. The group wants to eliminate the slot machines as they say they are a danger to the people of the state of Maine.

However, while the group has been trying to eliminate slot machines, there is another group trying to get a slot machine casino legalized in Oxford County. They say that they believe they will be ready to have their slot machine legalization bill on the ballot in November of next year.

Only one slot machine initiative will make it onto the ballot this year, and that is the one for a tribal slot machine racino in Washington County. They have enough signatures to put it on the ballot for this upcoming November.

Supporters of the slot machine bill believe that the racino is a good way to bring in revenue for the county, which has been impoverished for a long time. Opponents say that slot machines might bring in some revenue, but the amount that it will cost the county and the state in social costs is too high of a price to pay.
