FBI Cracking Down on Online Gambling

The FBI has been spending the last few months gearing up for one of the biggest online gambling days of the year – Super Bowl Sunday. They are bound and determined to make it illegal to gamble online, and they are going to prosecute those that try it.

The FBI’s Organized Crime Program has been trying to eradicate Internet gambling, and has been going after those that try to get around them. They have been handing down indictments against those that run or are affiliated with gambling web sites as well as those banks that may have assisted in bankrolling their operations. They are going after foreign businessmen as well as American – all in their quest to end online gaming.

Last month they arrested board members of Neteller – which is a British company that assists those that want to play the slot machines online or any other sort of online gaming funding. They say that the Wire Act makes online gambling illegal – and are prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law. They are scaring away businessmen who would have normally come to the US who have ties with online slot machines and gaming, as they are afraid of being arrested while in the country.

The Wire Act of 1961 only applies to companies, however, so individual betters cannot be prosecuted – but those with ties to the companies can be. Many companies will not allow bets from US customers any longer, especially after they went after two betting sites that are located in Antigua and London. The World Trade Organization has already said that the US cannot continue the way they have been, going after foreign rivals – but the US government is showing no signs of backing down.
