Governor Won’t Try to Stop Slot Machine BillDemocrat Lou Lang has introduced legislation that would bring in more casinos and more slot machines to the state of Illinois than they currently have. He wants to expand gambling to the state’s five racetracks as well as add four slot machine riverboat locations. Lang believes that by adding in the additional slot machines, that they would be able to bring in $3.5 billion initially and $2-3.2 billion each year after that. Opponents say that there is entirely no reason to add any more slot machines, as Illinois currently has thousands of slot machines up and running. The expansion of gambling in the state was originally threatened by Governor Rod Blagojevich, who said he would oppose slot machine expansion in the state. However, Lang says that the governor is now “neutral” on the subject and will not veto the legislation if it comes to his office. When asked, Blagojevich had no comment either way as to how the new slot machine legislation might turn out.
