Greyhounds Trying to Overturn Slot Machine DecisionEven as the slot machines run and the bells ring, there are three groups fighting to have the bill legalizing the repealed. The Humane Society, Grey2K, and Floridians Against Expanded gambling, are claiming that the petitions that got the slot machines on the ballot were illegal – that they continued thousands of forged signatures. The first judge threw out the lawsuit claiming that it didn’t matter because once the voters voted on it; they made the slot machines legal. They said the petitions got the slot machines on the ballot, but they did not get them legalized – the voters did that. They appealed that decision, and the second judge they got said that it did matter how the slot machine amendment got on the ballot, and decided that it was worthy of court time and money. There is now a delay in the proceedings granted by the judge to the group Floridians for a Level Playing Field – who is the group responsible for gathering the signatures for the slot machine petition, and getting it on the ballot. If the court finds that the petitions are not valid, then the slot machine amendment would be invalidated, and they would have to start over. Those companies that have invested money bringing slot machines into their establishments would lose the money they have already put into them.
