Horse Tracks Helping O’Malley with Slot Machines

If there was any doubt as to whether or not the horse racing industry thought O’Malley might legalize slot machines, all you have to do is look at his bank account. Two Maryland racetrack owners gave a minimum of $80,000 to Governor O’Malley’s campaign just two months before he was elected; many think it is a show of good faith that he will try to legalize slot machines for them and make their investment a good one.

O’Malley has already talked about legalizing slot machines, perhaps just a limited amount of them at first and then seeing where it goes. He said he is not planning on pursuing a slot machine bill during the first legislative session, but he does feel that it is an eventuality. According to his office, whether or not companies that are linked to slot machines, or the desire to have them legalized, have donated money to his campaign – it still won’t change the way he feels about slot machines.

The slot machine affiliated companies that donated to his campaign say that they do not believe that the amounts they donated to O’Malley will have an effect on whether or not he chooses to legalize slot machines. William Rickman, owners of the Ocean Downs, said that he was not looking for “favoritism” just a “fair slots bill” that he can get behind.

The report that shows how much money actually came from the pro slot machine camps came out just recently, and when you look at it there is definitely money coming in from racetracks and those that would like nothing better than to see the slot machines legalized.
