Placement of Lottery Adds to Addiction

Many find the placement of lottery booths pretty much anywhere that someone would look is just a way to get those that can least afford it to play. They are usually in off track betting parlors, next to cash registers in stores, etc. – places where people who don’t have a lot of money to spend would normally be found.

Studies have shown that the closer one is to the gambling implement the more likely they will become addicted to it. The lottery is usually played by those without a lot of money who are looking for a quick fix to their money problems. These are usually the people who can least afford to pay. Some call the lottery a “tax on the desperate” for that is usually the only people who play it.

Tom Grey, the Executive Director of the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling in Washington, D.C. says it is the same as having a slot machine casino in every neighborhood. The proximity to the lottery is simply so that more people will play.

New York’s lottery system says that they are trying to help those that have a lottery addiction – with statements on their web site that say so. They warn players against playing too much, and that it is meant for entertainment purposes only.

There has been talk of training the lottery ticket sellers so that if they are showing signs of having an addiction to the game, that they would know not to sell to those people. However, the training is only done sporadically and hasn’t even been done sine 2002.
