South Dakota Tribes Ask for More Slot Machines

The tribes of South Dakota are requesting more slot machines from the state, and they feel that the governor is intentionally holding them back. They are currently trying to get the amount of slot machines that they are allowed increased from 250, because they have the ability to house them, and they have the clientele to service them.

They believe that Governor Mike Rounds is trying to keep the tribes’ slot machine numbers down so that they do not interfere with the money that the lottery and gambling in Deadwood brings in. The tribes are meeting in Rapid City this week to discuss their gambling issues including the need for more slot machines.

They want to expand their casino operations, and slot machines are a big part of that. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe is just one of many that are looking at upcoming renewals on their slot machine compacts, and they are looking to go into negotiations soon. They know that the slot machines are going to be a big issue and are meeting with the other tribes to see how they might facilitate that.

Both parties say that they are looking to negotiate with “good faith” and if they do, then the government will not get involved. However, if they do not then the government will step in and no one knows what they will decide. The tribes are currently allowed unlimited Class II slot machines, such as bingo machines – it is just the Class III slot machines, the Vegas-type machines that they are fighting to have the restriction limited.
