No Mention of Slot Machines DistressingMany in Maryland assumed that Governor Martin O’Malley would discuss the legalization of slot machines in his State of the State address, but they were not brought up at all. O’Malley discussed the fact that they would need a new revenue source, but left many thinking that he could be discussing a tax increase instead of bringing in slot machines. The Republicans are sure that O’Malley is referencing higher taxes, where as the Democrats are not as sure. The race tracks are complaining that they need the slot machines in order to survive, for neighboring states already have them and they are unable to compete. Many Democrats think that O’Malley needs to try the legalization of slot machines, before the state gets in even further over their heads in budget deficits. Many are upset that slot machines have not been legalized already. They say that their residents are going across state lines to play the machines, and that is millions of dollars in slot machine revenue that could be staying in the state. Money that could be used for many things, including building new schools. One thing most people are agreed upon is the fact that without the slot machines the government is either going to have to raise taxes or cut governmental services. They say that no matter when he chooses to deal with the problems, they are only going to continue getting worse.
