Slot Machine Employees Still Affected By SmokeThere is a group of concerned citizens who have been trying to expand the ban of no indoor smoking to Atlantic City’s casinos. They say that even those areas of the casinos that are supposed to ban smoking are coming back with high levels of cigarette smoke in their air. They cite the Rhode Island study that shows that their separate non-smoking areas still show high levels of cigarette smoke, as their process of creating smoke free environments are the same. They found that the more you closed off areas to make them smoke free, the worse the smoke got in those areas that were allowed smoking. But it wasn’t as if they were removing the smoke from the free zones, as they found that they were about half as polluted as their counterparts. In one facility they discovered that the non smoking area was 39% as polluted as the smoking area. Because of these figures, the group GASP is trying to make all the slot machine and gambling casinos smoke free because the people who work there are suffering. They say that slot machine employees are being subjected to five times the annual limit set by the EPA for smoke exposure. Casino employees are already over the legal limit, but with the changes it is making it worse.
