Slot Machines, Not Taxes, are the Way to GoMaryland lawmakers have been discussing various taxes that they can impose on residents to come up with additional needed revenue. In case they haven’t been paying attention, no one wants to see more taxes, especially when the legalization of slot machines would solve the revenue problem. They have talked about taxing cigarettes, which is not a bad idea – especially since most people would like to see cigarettes eliminated anyway. They talk about increasing the price of traffic tickets, which again, is not a bad idea considering the only people getting them are those that are doing something they shouldn’t be anyway. However, with these smaller taxes, the money doesn’t usually end up going to stuff that is needed – it just ends up somewhere that residents wouldn’t have been willing to pay for in the first place. But the really bad part is the fact that Marylanders have been going across the state line for years to play slot machines in other states and that is money that could be used here in the state. People are going to play the slot machines, let’s just make it so that they do it in state and we keep the revenue in house; because right now, the people of Pennsylvania and West Virginia are using our revenue to keep their taxes down
