South Shore Could Get Casino

Officials on South Shore think that they could be the location for the state’s first casino. The Mashpee Wampanoag tribe has just been granted federal recognition as a sovereign nation, and they and their investors are excited because this means they will be able to build a casino – they just have to find out where first.

They have been looking for land since they started the process, and they would like it within 50 miles of the land they already own in Mashpee. The tribe is planning on building a resort type of casino with slot machines – or at least something very similar to them. If the state votes to allow slot machines in, they could get Class III Vegas style slots, but if they don’t, the tribe says they will still be able to get something like them, perhaps a Class II slot machine instead.

However, experts agree, that the tribe is going to have a tough time convincing a Massachusetts community that this is a good move for them. They are not going to want all of the extras that come from having a slot machine casino in their backyard. The tribe says that if they can get a large portion of land within 50 miles of the 200 acres they already own in Mashpee, then they will be able to claim both areas as part of the reservation.

Plymouth might be a good choice for them, except for the fact that Plymouth is not interested. Their town planner said that they are not interested in a slot machine casino, and will not welcome nor will they solicit the tribe.
