Tribes Contribute to Gambling Addiction ProgramsObviously the Indian tribes have an influence on the number of gambling addicts there are as they own all of the slot machines in the state of California. However, they also contribute in a positive way by funding the state’s programs for slot machine and gambling addictions. The tribes are actually the only ones contributing to the Office of Problem and Pathological Gambling. With the release of a new report that says a large chunk of the California population is addicted to slot machines, many of them do not think that it will affect their pending compacts. The tribes say that their compacts will still be signed, because they are the ones funding the addiction programs. They are aware that adding more slot machines may increase the number of gambling addicts, but they do not think that they will increase substantially more. They feel that the millions of dollars that they donate to the programs more than take care of the problem. The
state’s office that handles problem gamblers has been open for a
couple of years and is fully funded by the tribes. They spend
about $3 million each year to try and inform and educate those
that might become addicted to slot machines. The state of
California has other forms of gambling besides the slot machines
– they have horse racing, the lottery, and card clubs. Only the
tribes can operate the slot machines.
