UNLV and Harvard Join Forces Against Gambling AddictionUniversity of Las Vegas and the Harvard Medical School’s Division on Addictions have teamed up to study the behavior of slot machine and gambling addicts. They are paying participants, of whom they hope to have 180, $100 each to let them interview them over the phone three times over a three month period. They are aware that there is a problem in the rural communities of Nevada that is not being addressed. Many have slot machine and gambling addictions, but there is no help available to them. Two of the biggest gambling addiction groups are the elderly and youth. The elderly have a difficult time finding somewhere to get help, or they are too embarrassed to ask for it. At risk youth may not be able to enter a casino and play the slot machines legally, but that does not stop them. A 2005 study discovered that 42% of area high school students had gambled at least once in 2004. They also found that 7.2% of those same students had gambled 12 or more times during that same time period. The study would take those that qualify and do an initial telephone interview with them. A month later, trained specialists would call back and interview them again. Then three months later, the same thing would happen, and that would be the end of the study. One does not have to be a severe slot machine or gambling addict to participate in the study, they are also hoping to get those that suspect they may be developing a problem.
