Battin Fighting for Smaller TribesState Senator Jim Battin is fighting for the little guy. He says that the smaller tribes are permitted by law to operate slot machines, but are unable to get the licenses that they need due to a cap that was signed by the state. Battin says that the larger tribes have been able to get their licenses and their slot machines, but what about the ones that are now not able to do so? Battin says that under the law they are allowed to operate 2,000 slot machines. However, the cap stops them from getting their licenses because the larger tribes have so many already. He says that the law is unfair and doesn’t allow the little guy a fighting chance. By allowing hem to get their slot machines as well, they are allowing them to make some money for their tribe. He says that there are a group of about 15 tribes who have not gotten all of the slot machines that are allotted them because of the cap. He wants fair and equal treatment for all of them. This will not affect the compacts just approved for 17,000 slot machines in the state as this is considered a different entity. The bill to give them the slot machines was originally passed years ago. However, when Governor Gray Davis passed the control of slot machines to the California Gambling Control Commission, those that had not gotten their slot machines left were hung out to dry.
