Compact Being Challenged

The Florida State Legislature is upset that the governor felt he could negotiate a slot machine compact without them. Governor Charlie Crist had finally come to a deal with the tribe, one that should have been made years ago. With the federal government threatening to give the tribe whatever they want, the state had to come to an agreement, and so Crist went ahead without the approval of legislators.

Now they are asking the Florida Supreme Court is Crist is doing his job, or if he is doing things that are not his decisions to make. They claim that he is entering territory that he is not approved for, and that it is the legislature’s right to have some say in the decisions that are made.

They say that he exceeded his authority and are challenging the compact. The tribe has already started operating the slot machines that they were approved for, and the US Department of the Interior has approved the slot machine and table game compact as well.

Lawmakers want the compact invalidated and the slot machines removed. They say that he does not have approval to “implement public policy by himself” but many say that had he not, the state of Florida would be looking at a slot machine compact that gives them the right to have the slots, but the state would not see any of the revenue from them.
