Government In Hot Water Over Slot Machine Regulations

Several former owners of video slot machines in Seoul are upset with the government and are suing them. They say that the government has been inconsistent with their regulations for slot machines, and thus have left them bankrupt, and they want compensation.

The owners of the Sea Story slot machines, also known as “Bada Iyagi,” have filed in the Seoul Central District Court, and they allege that the government is responsible for the mess that the slot machine industry is in right now. They say that they had encouraged them to invest in the slot machines, and then once “public sentiment turned against” the slot machines they turned their back on them as well.

They say that the government had levied heavy taxes on them, attempting to drive them out of business. The nineteen former slot machines owners that brought the suit say that they were approved for the machines and the Korea Media Ranking Board had classified it as a game. Then they decided that it was a slot machine and that it was gambling. Their machines were confiscated and they lost their businesses. They claim that their property rights were violated.

They are asking for 30 million won each as compensation. This amount will grow as there are thousands of other former owners that are planning on bringing suit against them as well. They say that they have put millions, and in some cases, billions into their businesses only to have their government turn on them.
