Racetrack Turns Its Back on Horses

The horse trainers and owners stood out in the rain and the sun and gathered names on petitions, just in support of the tracks and their bid to get slot machines. However, it seems that the support is only one sided, and now many of the horse owners, etc. feel betrayed by the one place that is supposed to help them.

Once the slot machines came in to Pompano Beach many thought that this would be the end to their troubles, instead they were just getting started. Many of those that supported the track’s bid for slot machines are now, or have already, moving on to other venues. They say that the problem is that the track has turned its back on them.

They say that although they have their slot machines, they have cut the purses for the trainers and the owners by around 35%. They said that if they supported the slot machines the tracks told them that they were going to be part of a “partnership” and that has not happened.

They are angry that they worked so hard to get the slot machines, and they say that even with the money coming in they still are not seeing it. As Pompano Park is not required by law to share their slot machine revenues with their horse owners, no one can force them to increase purses.

Many of them say that it is simply one more slight that the track has heaped on them. From charging for stalls for active racers, and other various fees, they are trying to make a profit off of the horses, but not willing to support them in the end.
