Slot Machines are Not the Answer for Maryland

All of those people who said that slot machines were not the answer for bringing in additional revenue to the state can now stand up and say that they told them so. What should have worked simply for the state of Maryland has not worked out the way they planned, and working with legalized slot machines has turned out to be just as hard as getting them legalized in the first place.

The economy is already so down it doesn’t have anywhere to go but up, but that still won’t help Maryland. Most states launched their slot machines at a time when people were throwing away their money hand over fist. Getting a slot machine license was a guaranteed Golden Ticket, and people were lining up to get them.

However, those seeking the ever elusive slot machine have found themselves on the wrong end of the deal these days. People don’t have the expendable income to throw around like they used to, so those licenses are not as high in demand as they used to be. Maryland said that they were expecting to get 15,000 slot machines in their state and they would bring in $600 million a year for education and the budget.

But now the bids are in and there were only six bidders – all of whom asked for less than half of the number of slot machines that the state was looking at bringing in. Not only that, but they are looking to pay less for the license than the state thought they would, which leaves them with even less money to count at the end of the day.
